For more than two decades, Tim Dardis built a successful career in fintech, working with companies like PayPal and Venmo. By most measures, he had already “made it.” But over time, something started to shift.
After years in the corporate world, Tim began thinking less about career progression and more about the kind of legacy he wanted to leave behind.
“I’ve worked in the corporate world for 20 plus years now, mainly in fintech,” Tim said. “But over the last five years or so, it kind of dawned on me that this is not the legacy I want to leave behind.”
Like many professionals exploring entrepreneurship, Tim initially assumed that starting a business meant building something entirely from scratch or buying an independent company. In fact, he was skeptical about franchising at first.
“My mind was thinking that's not really owning your own business,” Tim said. “Which has been proven incorrect.”
That mindset changed when he began exploring franchise ownership with the help of Franchise Sidekick.
Rather than navigating hundreds of franchise opportunities alone, Tim partnered with a Sidekick Advisor who helped him step back and evaluate what truly mattered in a business opportunity – not just financially, but personally.
That shift in perspective would ultimately lead him to a brand that aligned perfectly with his values: MaxStrength.
Finding the right fit with Franchise Sidekick
When Tim first began exploring franchises, he admits he was all over the place. Like many prospective franchise owners, he was looking at a wide range of industries and business models. That’s when his Sidekick Advisor stepped in to guide the process.
Instead of simply presenting a list of opportunities, she took the time to understand who Tim was – his goals, motivations and what would actually make him excited to build a business.
“My advisor did a really thorough interview of who I am and what I like,” Tim said.
That discovery process uncovered that Tim wasn’t just looking for a profitable business. He wanted to build something meaningful. Which led to the introduction of a brand that wasn’t even on his radar.
“She threw in MaxStrength at the end,” Tim said. “She goes, ‘I know this isn't something you said you were interested in, but it seems like it would align with your core values.’”
She was right.
The more Tim learned about the MaxStrength franchise model, the more it resonated with him – not just as a business, but as a mission.
“It ended up being the one that I was really drawn to,” Tim said.
This is exactly where Sidekick creates value for prospective franchise owners. We help candidates look beyond surface-level interest and uncover opportunities that truly fit their goals, personality and long-term vision.
Why MaxStrength stood out
For Tim, the decision wasn’t just about fitness. It was about the philosophy behind the brand. MaxStrength’s culture and operating principles immediately stood out.
“It’s more like the core values of MaxStrength,” Tim said. “Consistency. Always improving. Over-delivering. Putting the customer first. Helping people.”
Those principles weren’t just marketing language, they were embedded into the way the business operates. And just three months after opening his location, Tim could already see those values playing out every day inside his gym.
“I can tell you, I’ve been open for three months, that’s what we do. Very, very consistently,” Tim said.
Another major advantage was the franchise system itself. Instead of having to create every process, Tim was able to follow a proven playbook.
“I’m not paying a royalty to do my own thing,” Tim said. “I’m paying a royalty because someone else already figured it out. I’m just doing what they did.”
For many entrepreneurs exploring franchising, this realization is a turning point. A franchise system isn’t a limitation, it’s a shortcut to a tested business model.
And in Tim’s case, it paid off quickly.
“We had the most successful opening of any location, I think,” Tim said.
Today, his MaxStrength location has already hired three employees and is continuing to grow.
The reality of franchise ownership (and why it’s worth it)
While the early results have been strong, Tim is the first to admit that entrepreneurship is not easy. Like many franchise owners transitioning from corporate careers, he underestimated how much work would be required.
“Going into it, I was a little arrogant thinking, well, it’s a franchise … it should be easy,” Tim said. “It’s really hard to do this.”
He’s currently balancing two demanding roles continuing his career in fintech while building his MaxStrength business. But despite the long hours and sleepless nights, the experience has been deeply fulfilling.
“I feel really good,” Tim said. “Like, holy sh*t, I finally figured out what I want to be when I grow up … but I’m 45.”
For Tim, franchising wasn’t about replacing his career overnight. It was about building something meaningful, creating his own culture and investing in a business he believes in.
And looking back, he’s confident that working with Sidekick made the journey significantly easier.
Rather than navigating the complex franchise landscape alone, he had an advisor guiding him through the process, helping him ask better questions, evaluate opportunities and ultimately find the right fit.
