Dr. Jason shares the story of Therabody

What if your biggest setback became the foundation for a category-defining company?

In this episode of “The Sidekick Life,” Ryan and Tyler sit down with Dr. Jason Wersland, the founder of Therabody, to unpack the real story behind the Theragun. Not the polished version. The gritty, eight-and-a-half-year grind filled with setbacks, breakthroughs and relentless belief.

This isn’t just a wellness tech story, it’s a masterclass in entrepreneurship, resilience and building something that actually matters.

Key takeaways

  • Solve a real problem, don’t chase a business idea
  • Expect the journey to take longer than you think
  • Find early adopters who feel the value immediately
  • Education and trust beats hype every time
  • Your mindset is your biggest battleground
  • Success comes with trade-offs, be intentional about them

The origin: Solving a problem you can’t ignore

Therabody didn’t start as a business idea. It started with pain – literally.

After a serious motorcycle accident left him with a debilitating neck injury, Dr. Jason found himself stuck in what he described as a “no man’s land” between medical care and real recovery.

“I wasn’t trying to build a company,” Dr. Jason said. “I was trying to solve a problem.”

With no solution available, he did what great founders do, he created one. Using a modified jigsaw tool, he began experimenting on himself, searching for relief and uncovering the early science behind what would become the Theragun.

That obsession with solving a real problem, not chasing a business, became the foundation of everything.

Eight years in the wilderness (before the breakthrough)

Most people see the success, but few understand the timeline.

It took eight and a half years from the first prototype to securing a real investment. And along the way there was:

  • Failed partnerships
  • Financial strain
  • Being taken advantage of
  • Countless iterations of the product

“I had three business partners that screwed me over,” Dr. Jason said. “And I still had to buy my company back.”

This is the part most aspiring entrepreneurs underestimate, the middle. The long stretch where nothing looks like it’s working … but everything is being built.

The real breakthrough: Athletes, not experts

Initially, Dr. Jason targeted chiropractors and medical professionals, but it didn’t work.

Too many barriers. Too much red tape. Too much skepticism.

Then something unexpected happened. Athletes understood the value instantly.

“They didn’t care about billing codes or insurance,” Dr. Jason said. “They used it, felt it and said ‘I need this.’”

That shift changed everything. Instead of selling to institutions, he focused on:

  • Locker room influencers
  • Athletes with credibility
  • People others trusted for performance advice

This became his go-to strategy:

“One-to-one → one-to-many → many-to-many.”

A simple but powerful framework for building adoption from the ground up.

Building a movement, not just a product

Therabody didn’t win because it was first, it won because it was different.

From day one, the focus was on:

  • Education
  • Science-backed validation
  • Real user transformation

“We weren’t going to release anything without science behind it,” Dr. Jason said.

And that commitment led to:

  • Hundreds of studies
  • A full education platform (Therabody University)
  • Strong trust across athletes, trainers and consumers

Scaling without losing the mission

Today, Therabody has evolved far beyond the original Theragun to include:

  • Recovery systems
  • Wellness tech
  • Beauty products
  • Global retail presence

The core mission hasn’t changed.

“When you’re done using our products, you should understand your body better,” Dr. Jason said.

The entrepreneur mindset most people miss

One of the most powerful takeaways from this episode isn’t about business, it’s about mindset. Entrepreneurship is a mixture of external and internal pressure.

“Your worst enemy couldn’t say the things you say to yourself,” Dr. Jason said.

His advice?

  • Most of your thoughts are not true
  • Learn to filter the noise
  • Do hard things daily to build mental resilience
  • Keep going, even when your mind tells you not to

That inner battle is the real game.

The hidden cost of success

Behind the growth, there were sacrifices.

“There are scars,” Dr. Jason said. “Missing moments … you can’t get those back.”

But there’s also perspective. Growth, healing and relationships evolve over time. And success isn’t just measured in revenue, it’s measured in impact, legacy and the people you help along the way.

Thinking about franchise ownership?

Dr. Jason’s story is a powerful reminder that the best businesses aren’t built overnight, they’re earned through persistence, problem-solving and belief when no one else sees the vision yet. What started as a personal injury turned into a global brand because he refused to stop searching for a better solution.

If you’re feeling stuck in the “what if” phase of entrepreneurship, take this as your sign, it doesn’t have to stay there. With the right guidance, model and support, building something of your own is more possible than you think.
